Shocked!

So, I was taking my digital camera apart in the solar car office to tap into the buttons (I wanted to be able to control the camera from external signals). So, I’m slowly taking apart the camera, and I notice a BIG capacitor for the flash. It says on the side, 330V. I say “Neat!” and put the entire flash assembly aside, continuing my dismemberment of the camera.

So, couple of solar car people come in, and they’re like neat! Apparently the flash was covered in a lecture they took that day. So, I reach for the flash… then my entire hand convulses for about 3 seconds… a second later, my brain clicks into gear. D’Oh! 4 years of Electrical / Computer Engineering and 4 years of Solar Car… and I finally get shocked… disassembling a freaking CAMERA??? Anyway, my left hand index finger was gone for about 3 hours, and my entire left hand was tingling for quite a while. :p

I did end up wiring all the extra wires into the buttons of the camera, though! :D So I can now take pictures, focus the camera, and control many other signals just by connecting different wires… wow… think of the possibilities! I originally wanted it for aerial photography and time-lapsed movies of people working around solar car… but for instance, we could mount this on top of the chase car and have it take pictures every 30 seconds. or hook a button to solar car driver’s tiller bars and have it take pictures when a button is pressed… Yes, I’m a geek. :p

Anyway… Camera still works, so no lasting damage. And I can finally feel stuff on my left index finger. :D
