Wharf to Wharf
I participated in my first road race today doing the Wharf to Wharf, a 6 mile race from Santa Cruz Wharf to the Capitola Wharf. My goal was to be under an hour and I came in at 59:20! Yippeee! My split for the first mile was a bit over 12 minutes (I had to walk for the first 3~4 minutes since there were sooo many people on the road) and I managed to shave it down to 37 minutes by mile 4 but I started slowing down after that, doing 11 minute miles for the last two miles. I had a nasty cramp halfway through the mile 5 that I had to work through - I’ve never felt anything quite like it before. I couldn’t stand up straight nor breath fully. I guess my body isn’t quite used to the one hour of continuous exercise that I was putting it through.
I had started training for it couple of months ago but a foot injury stopped me from running… The new shoes that I got seemed to have done the job. My next goal is to shave a minute a mile off to be under 54~55 minutes which should be more than doable. What a way to started off a day! I’m sure I’ll feel it tomorrow, though.
Edit: Adding a link to the MarathonFoto website picture of me where you can barely see me. :p
